Settled in approximately 1636, Hartford has developed a deep and wonderful history. One of the most notable memorial locations in the city is the Mark Twain House and Museum. Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name, Mark Twain, lived in Hartford from 1871 until 1891, when he and his family moved to Europe due to financial hardship. In that time, he published eight books, saw the birth of three of his children, founded Charles L. Webster Publishing and Company, and was awarded the honourary Master of Arts degree at Yale University. In 1963, his house in Hartford was designated a National Historic Landmark, and has since been exquisitely restored and preserved.
